Playing by the Rules: A Primer on Massachusetts Rules of Criminal Procedure 14, 17, and 36

This evening program will address three of the thorniest Rules of Criminal Procedure: Rule 14 (“Pretrial Discovery”), Rule 17 (“Summonses for Witnesses”), and Rule 36 (“Case Management”).
The following topics will be discussed:
- An overview of pre-trial discovery under Rule 14: mandatory discovery, reciprocal discovery, and special defenses;
- Compelled production of materials from third parties prior to trial under Rule 17: the Lampron/Dwyer protocol; and
- Speedy trial issues under Rule 36: calculating the time limits and the excluded periods.
Part of the Superior Court Newer Judges Seminar Series, this program has been designed for Superior Court judges, although judges from other departments are also invited to attend.
