Mental Illness in the Courtroom: Protecting Litigants and the Judicial Process (Zoom Programs)

Wednesday, October 14, 2020 | 3:00pm - 4:30pm UTC

Dr. Judith Edersheim

Co-sponsored with the Center for Law, Brain & Behavior at Massachusetts General Hospital, this Zoom program is the second seminar of the Neuroscience and Law Series for Massachusetts Judges.

A large percentage of courtroom litigants struggle with active symptoms of mental illness and substance use disorders. If active and impairing, these symptoms can threaten their ability to participate in the legal system and preserve vital due process rights. In addition, these symptoms can be disruptive to the judicial process, and if severe enough, may raise safety issues inside the courtroom for all personnel. In this presentation, Dr. Edersheim will provide a framework for how to understand symptoms of these disorders in the courtroom, and offer specific suggestions for how to manage these symptoms in order to preserve and support the rights of litigants while ensuring the integrity and safety of the legal process.
