Media and the Courts: Judicial Transparency and the Right to Privacy

The role of the judge involves balancing the transparency of court proceedings with the right to privacy and confidentiality interests. This program will be moderated by SJC Justice David A. Lowy, co-chair of the Judiciary Media Committee. An overview of SJC Rule 1:19 (Electronic Access to the Courts) and commentary will be provided by retired SJC Justice Robert J. Cordy and Rachelle G. Cohen, Assistant Editorial Page Editor of The Boston Globe.
Jennifer Donahue and Erika Gully-Santiago will be on hand to discuss the role of the Supreme Judicial Court Public Information Office. Additionally, Superior Court Judge Douglas H. Wilkins will address controlling the message and avoiding error.
The program will then move into a more participatory format, where hypothetical scenarios will be discussed. Commentary will be provided by the panelists, including David Hurlburt of WCVB-TV. Attendees will be encouraged to give input and offer insight.
