Introduction to the Judicial Guidelines for Civil Cases with Self-Represented Litigants (In-Person Program)
Co-sponsored with the Court Education Department | Executive Office of the Trial Court
Massachusetts courts continue to adapt to the growing number of self-represented litigants and the unique challenges they bring. Judges must navigate this evolving landscape while ensuring fairness, maintaining access to justice, and upholding ethical obligations. The 2025 Judicial Guidelines for Civil Cases with Self-Represented Litigants, issued by the Supreme Judicial Court, build on the 2006 Judicial Guidelines for Civil Hearings Involving Self-Represented Litigants. They reflect significant developments in best practices, caselaw, and court rules and policies. The revised Guidelines are designed to support judges in balancing their duty to hear these cases fairly against the requirements of the Code of Judicial Conduct.
This program will:
- Introduce the Guidelines, outlining their history, goals, and purpose
- Address judges’ obligations and the CJC
- Highlight key caselaw developments every judge should know
All participants will receive a hard copy of the Judicial Guidelines.
