Handling Counsel Issues: Withdrawal, Firing, Forfeiture, and the Pro Se Party

The seminar will address issues concerning representation by counsel that may arise in the civil and the criminal context. These will include:
Withdrawal of counsel – reasons and timing
- Representation of corporations and other institutional entities
- Requests to replace counsel from defendants where a Constitutional right to counsel attaches
- Attorney conflicts of interest
- Actual and potential conflicts and client waiver
- Forfeiture of the right to counsel
- Pro se representation and the use of standby counsel
- Indigency issues and the status of appointed counsel
- Colloquies relating to representation
Part of the Superior Court Newer Judges Seminar Series, this program has been designed for Superior Court judges, but judges from other departments are also invited to attend.
