This program is designed primarily for Superior Court judges with little or no prior background in Massachusetts criminal practice. Using a hypothetical fact pattern, the program will provide a practical overview of the events and procedures in the life of a typical criminal case prior to trial, including the District Court complaint and arraignment process, probable cause hearings, grand jury practice, Superior Court arraignments and bail hearings, discovery, pre-trial motion practice, dispositional (“lobby”) conferences and pleas, and appointment and withdrawal of counsel and stand-by counsel. The program will also address tips and strategies for criminal case management.
