Wednesday, May 17, 2017 | 1:00pm - 4:30pm UTC
This afternoon program will focus on advanced jury trial management techniques for both new and experienced judges. A wide range of practical issues that often arise over the course of a criminal or civil jury trial will be covered, including:
- Pre-trial motions, voir dire requests, jury questionnaires and unusual motions-in-limine
- Methods of jury empanelment and improper challenges
- Role of the judge during opening statement and closing arguments
- Curative instructions, declaring mistrials, and maintaining juror impartiality in the digital age
- Controlling misbehaving attorneys and/or witnesses
- Avoiding pitfalls when interacting with seated jurors outside of the courtroom (judge, court officers, and lawyers)
- Post-verdict communications with jurors
- And much more!
The panelists will offer a variety of viewpoints on ways to address these jury trial issues and there will be interactive discussion. You are are encouraged to bring examples of particular trial problems to discuss with faculty and colleagues.
