Advanced Skills for Appellate Judges

This 3-1/2 day NJC course is designed to provide appellate judges with advanced training in a variety of practical and often encountered issues.

This course is designed to provide appellate judges with advanced topics in opinion writing, small group dynamics and collaborative decision-making, law clerk/staff management, how to get the most during oral argument, ethics as they pertain to appellate judges, and other topics of interest to the experienced appellate judge. In addition to structured, interactive presentations from faculty, participants will have several opportunities for peer-to-peer learning.


It is anticipated that the curriculum will include such topics as:

  • opinion writing;
  • small group dynamics and collaborative decision-making;
  • how to get the most during oral argument;
  • civility and professionalism;
  • ethics issues pertinent to the appellate bench;
  • judicial deference to executive branch agency decisions;
  • trends in judicial security;
  • a re-examination of the death penalty 50 years after Furman v. Georgia;
  • standards of review and writs
